'잿꾸러미' refers to a bundle made by wrapping small twigs and ash (灰) with something like newspaper, and it is a folk item that was used in the past in Korea to playfully hit people.

In an anecdote that appears during the sermon, it is introduced as a story that the moment the preacher's uncle-in-law furtively glanced at the 신부's face at a wedding, a person standing nearby hit the uncle-in-law's eyelid with this 잿꾸러미, and this is cited as evidence showing that the 신랑 and 신부 could not see each other's faces in old Korean wedding customs. This is used to explain the circumstances under which the biblical story of Jacob, who was engaged to Rachel but actually married Leah and only realised it after one night, was actually possible.
